These are part of the Karpathian range.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They say it\u2019s the most beautiful road in the world.\u00a0<\/span><span>We really wanted to see if this is true. Now we know. IT IS!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>The route\u2019s official name is not so romantic: DN7C<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Transfagarasan is the second highest pass in Romania, after Transalpina. It\u2019s highest point is at 2042 metres.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The road starts officially from Badcov, near Pitesti town, crosses climbs on the Fagaras mountains and descends breathtakingly to Transylvania, on the N1 national road that connects Sibiu and Prasov. At its highest point there a picturesque, very small lake: Balea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Transfagarasan was constructed from 1970-1974. Nikolae Ceausesku had ordered to build the road following the invasion of Czechoslovakia by USSR. Imagine this: a notorious communist dictator built one of the most beautiful stretches of tarmac on earth!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At least 40 workers allegedly lost their lives during the construction of the road. Every year Trasfagarasan pass closes in the end of October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This year we have been among the last ones who drove the road, two days after the snow fall. It was an experience we will remember for long, especially the night we spent on the roadside at 1700 metres, with a view to the villages of Transylvania.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We advise you to find a car &#8211; preferably a powerful sports car &#8211; and make this road trip.
